July 24-28: Lake Powell

The weekend after my brother got home from his mission, my family headed to Lake Powell.  We left Sunday shortly after his Homecoming Meeting. It was a long pretty drive through the Kanab area.  We got there in time to set up our tent before the sun went down.

We camped on the beach on Lone Rock Beach/campground.  The further you get from the entrance the softer and deep the sand gets. It was a little scary driving around in there, but our Pilot did great!  Through the days we were there several vehicles got stuck. A huge bus like RV was stuck one night and they were there for over an hour spinning their tires back and forth. I don't know how they ended up getting out. Another time a mini van got stuck, and Jacob's service oriented heart encourage the men in our family to go bail them out. They were a french family that spoke hardly any English. If you know my dad, you know he is full equipped to handle any mechanical type of situation. The van was sunk in to their axles.  My dad was able to pull them out with his winch and had to pull them all the way to the parking lot. Another truck pulling a camper got stuck right by us on our last day. But they were able to get a truck to pull them out. Fun times.

These pictures don't do the scene justice. It was actually really pretty watching the full moon set. It was also cool to see the light reflect off the water. Southern Utah beauty.

The boys got right in the water after we got set up.  They both loved the water and wanted to be in it as much as possible.

The next morning they got right to playing in the water and the sand. It was so pretty and peaceful there on the water. I just wish the sun didn't come up so early!

Most of the people at this beach were European. The little tent next to ours is a french couple. They pitched their tent right next to ours...it was weird because there was all this space they could have used...

Jake was the first brave diver! He looks like a pterodactyl to me! Haha

This was our camp after the first sand storm on the second night. We had 2 blue tarps up for shade, but after the storm we just did one. Also my parents tent is collapsed so in case another storm came it wouldn't get ruined.

That second night we were in the middle of getting dinner ready when we saw lots of sand being thrown around by the wind some ways down the beach, but we could see that it was coming. It still came too fast to get everything down.  Max had fallen asleep on some towels under the blue tarp. And when the sand hitting him woke him up he was pretty scared. So jon grabbed him while I went for our new canopy that was blowing away and ending up scratching the paint Jeremy's parents Suburban, pretty bad. Then Jon tripped over a tie down while holding Max. Jon went right down, luckily not landing on Max, but his elbow when into his ribs and he bruised them. Me, Lex, Jake and my Dad caught our canopy, but it was already toast. Two of the legs were totally bend and unrepairable. It had been used for less than 24 hours! It was so sad, I had been wanting a canopy for a long time.

Jon had put the boys in the car. Then I noticed Jon holding our tent down, which the stakes pulled right up. Our tent doors were open in the direction the wind was coming so it was like a huge balloon being pulled away. Jon was holding it with all his strength. Me and Jake went over there to help hold it, while Lexie when to take her tent down. I realized we couldn't keep doing this and needed to take the pole out and collapse it. But I didn't want the poles to hit our car.  So we pulled it away and struggled to get the poles out.  After, that I noticed Lexie and helped her get her tent down. The I noticed Jeremy alone. The anchor had pulled out and the boat was being pushed down the shore while Jeremy tried to keep it off the beach and away from another boat! Craziness! Jon and Jake went to help him. There was a group of french people just standing there watching us trying to get our camp down. I kept yelling for the to help Jeremy with the boat, but they just stood there watching and...video taping!!! Seriously-come on people!

Then after helping Lexie, we took the "kitchen tent" down, and we went to help take my parents tent down, which was a canopy with walls. It got a little ruined too. But later my dad was able to take pieces from our canopy to fix theirs.  Then after getting my parents tent down. I noticed Rachel's tent. Adam and Rachel were holding it down. It is a tall tent and was hard to hold. Rachel was pretty worried at the craze this storm caused and that she was holding her tent alone, since she was the furthest away.  We got her tent down too.

Jon and Jeremy were able take the boat out to get it away from the shore. The storm took a while to calm down so they ended up taking the boat out.  Fine sand got all over EVERYTHING.  All of our tent windows were open. Still after washing the car a few times, sand comes out from places.

It was a crazy, fun adventure! And we were still able to eat our dinner! :)

We went tubing and I was so nervous. I guess Zac gets that from me. I know everything will be fine, but I really don't want to fall and get tons of water up my nose or hit the water hard. But I guess if you don't take the risk you don't get to enjoy the fun parts too. I am trying to teach that to Zac.

Hahaha, everytime we would get close to going out of the wake whoever was on the outside Lex or Me, would basically climb on top of Rachel to keep the weight on the inside. It was so funny! And I had a lot of fun! I ended up letting go prematurely without meaning to and Lexie came off at the same time.

I thought this was a really cute picture. I love to see my boys cuddling with family.

I also thought it was so funny that Max was holding his sunglasses up!

When we first got to the lake Zac was afraid to get off the boat into the water.  Every time we switch riders most of us get in the water to cool off. The water was perfect not to hot and not to cold! We tried to ease Zac in by just dipping him in and then back on the boat. But by the end the trip he loved to get in the water and was one of the first ones in every time the boat stopped. He was also scared to jump off the boat into the water. But by the end was doing that great too! Whether in the boat or on the shore Zac was in his life jacket in the water.

Jon was able to convince Zac to do a tube ride.  He had a good first ride and even asked to up the speed. With no falling off. A little later they rode again, at a pretty good speed, staying in the wake of course.

Then Jon pretended he was falling off. He wanted to make sure Zac knew it wasn't a big deal. It was so cute to see Zac holding on but also trying to pull his Daddy back up on the tube. Eventually, Jon grabbed Zac's leg and pulled him in. Zac was pretty shocked when he went under, but when his life jacket "popped [him] right up". He thought the ride was great!

Taking the boys and tube to shore

I am so glad Max got a nap. It is pretty hot in the tent at night and they take a while to fall asleep.

On one of our Wal-mart to get ice runs, my parents bought a bunch of ice cream. It was a great treat in the hot afternoon. But they melted SO fast! Even with dry ice.

The storm on the 3rd night looming in the distance, before it hit our camp.  Most of us had gone out on the boat for a quick run. Jon stayed at the campsite.  We were barely out of the no wake zone when we noticed the storm coming. We headed further out to see how fast it was coming and then headed right back to the camp to help Jon take everything down.  By the time we got there the storm was already there and Jon was already taking stuff down.

The other side where the storm has yet to go. Jeremy has some amazing tent stakes that we borrowed and with the rain fly on and doors and windows closed those stakes held our tent good. That night we went to dinner in Page and waited out the storm.

On our last day, we got a little wake boarding in. I didn't-which I am totally bugged at myself for! I should have just sucked it up and did it. Now, I regret it and it'll probably be harder to do next time.

Jon got up on the first try! He did great! Even with his bruised rib that was constantly hurting him all the time. This is only the 3rd time he has been wake boarding. And the first time was really hard.  Getting advice and tips from 10 different people. The second time was a few years ago and I think he did get up for a little bit.  But this time he did great. He had a good stance and got out of the wake without falling.

We did a little exploring and found this rock right under the surface of the water. It was pretty freaky for me. If I let my mind wander while I am in the ocean or Lake Powell for that matter and start to think of everything under me, it really makes me scared. Weird-I know. Its like this picture; it literally makes me sick to my stomach. (I really hesitate to post it.)

So it was so freaky to swim up to this rock and think about how far it goes under there and how deep it is.  Serious, jitters. I am glad I pushed that aside and just did it.

This is how Max was anytime we were in the water. He didn't have much control over the direction he life jacket would tip him. So he'd hold on to anyone around.

Then we headed over to Sand Mountain.  It has been almost 10 years since I've been to Lake Powell, I really missed it. And I missed the Neilson's too.  When I was in High School we'd go every summer with them. It was a blast. That is when we learned about Sand Mountain. I remember hiking all the way to the top and running down into to the water. It was so fun!

This mountain is literally, around a 60 degree incline. Steeper than 45 degrees. It is tough and in the sand and heat. I decide to hang out at the boat in the water with Max. While the boys took off.

I didn't think Zac would go much, but he followed along a ways behind. Zac is the lowest person in the picture.  I am so so so impressed with how far he went all by himself, and alone with no encouragement. I have been surprised lately at how he is starting to stick things out better without complaining. But it has to be completely he own desires and choice to do the thing.  Like yesterday, he spend TWO hours putting together a lego boat. With a little encouragement here and there, he did it none stop by himself with no complaining. I was so proud of him.

Jon came down from almost the top to help Zac up the rest of the way. Then they ran down. They had a good time!

Then we had lunch and headed home. On the way to Lake Powell we saw this "Best Friend's Animal Santuary" and thought the logo was so...I don't know, I can't think of a word to describe it... (Mind you Jon worked for a logo design company for a few years so he is quite opinionated when it comes to logos. But we had to take a picture on the way back.

It was a great trip and I am so glad we got to go and that Jon was able to take a break and relax. The week before they had some major fires at work. I am so glad they all got taken care of somewhat so they weren't too much of a concern.

The Return Missionary

July 21st, the Wednesday after we moved in, my brother Jacob returned from his 2 year mission to Piura Peru, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He flight was a little early, and I didn't go to the right terminal, so I was rushing to make it on time, but I made it with time to spare. The boys where holding these signs.

Rachel was in Phoenix looking for a place to live, and her flight came in a few mins after Jake's in the other terminal.  The boys sure love her!

Then we went to the Spaghetti Factory for lunch.

Two Years ago

Its sure fun to have him home!

Heber House and Stuff

Its been forever since I've blogged, it feels like. I just haven't felt like it. And the more I get behind the harder it is.  We have been here in Heber Valley for a little over a month now. Things are pretty up and down for me. The ward is great and everyone is so friendly. We were invited to dinner on Sunday with some new neighbors. They have boys the same ages as our, and are fun to be with. The sceneary is beautiful and the weather is actually really nice. But I am not a small town girl...yet anyway. I am still going to Provo all the time. I hope I can begin to manage that better as we get settled and school starts.  Anyway, I guess I'll just jump right in.

We are renting the house we are in now. I haven't been so open on my blog, with feelings and thoughts and such for fear of being judged and my inconsistent self-confidence. But I will attempt to be more so after reading the blog post at the link in the previous post.  Its a great entry.

So to give a brief summary of the last 8 months here goes: Before Jon started his job at SkullCandy in January, we knew that we would need to figure out what to do about the commute. It was too long for us.  We knew that it would only be something our family could sustain temporarily.  We looked into renting out our house in Provo and then moving to SLC or Heber and renting there. But after 30 days there was NO interest to rent our home. With the market crash, we could not afford to drop the rent to be competitive and supplement the rent enough to pay the mortgage, and rent something else that would fit our family.  Through much prayer, consideration and research, we decided to try and short sell our house as opposed to owing the bank 40k, after selling the home.  We were lucky enough to be approved for the short sale.  The bank was very quick and on top of things with us. They knew us as the family who had the "150-mile-daily commute".  Anyway, our Realtor advised us to be aggressive but still getting the required sales price for the bank, and after one offer fell through we got a solid one and sold the house in three and half months. It really seems like a miracle with all the other stories I hear about people trying to sell in the current market. We found this house to rent just 2 weeks before we closed on our house.  We have been lead every step of the way through this whole process. I know this was and is what is right for our family right now.

As for our current place, we still need to put stuff up on the walls and I am going to change my bedding, and we sold our old plaid couches that we've had our whole marriage and replaced them with Ikea decor. So I will post more pictures later when all that is done. But for now.

This is driving past Jordanelle. I love the "big sky" affect. The sky and clouds are just beautiful here, and unfortunately no pictures I can take will ever do it justice.

Dining into family room on the left. Stairs up to bedrooms.

Downstairs bathroom off the garage door and laundry room

Kitchen. Its almost the same layout as the last kitchen so it is pretty easy to cook in. And was easy to unpack, because everything already had a place. I miss my colored cabinets though.

Looking down from the stairs. The formal front room is to the left, not pictured

Storage space, a big deciding factor for us. We looked all over the Sugarhouse, millcreek, foothill, areas in SLC and in the Heber Valley. This house had most of the amenities we wanted/needed in a reasonable price range.

Masterbed

Masterbath

We got this cheap swingset to since we left the other one at the house, and we plan to leave this one too. I put most of it together all by myself! Jon and I got the frame and slide on one evening and when I went to put the swings on the next day I realized we put the top bar on upside down! I really wanted to get it done by the end of the day since Jon was so busy with work.  I was able to tip the set over and very trickily undo some choice bolts and finagle things to turn the bar the right way.  It was pretty hard and I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I can't believe I didn't just give up! I just kept moving along, trying something different til it worked and praying I wouldn't break it. It felt so good to have it all done by the time Jon got home!

This is a better picture of the view out the back yard. And as you can see it is a HUGE yard! Half an acre I believe, it takes Jon 90+ mins to mow it. There is no fence or back door, which is so annoying, but we're dealing. Beautiful views!

A few weeks ago we had lots of thunderstorms there were a couple nights where the thunder was rolling all night it seemed. The sunsets are gorgeous here when there are clouds.

This is the otherside of the sky that night. So cool

I love seeing the outline of the mountain when the sun goes down. You can see a planet out there too. The lone star til the night gets darker.

So True . . .

Fourth of July: Part 2

Sunday we had a BBQ and games with my family.

Part 2: Monday

I did my fourth 5k of the summer, the Provo Freedom Run. I did my average time. I thought I did better though because the clock at the finish line was off. So that was a let down. But the last part of the race was uphill for a good distance, and I ran the whole way. I was so proud of myself! I did have to walk for about a block after that. I had my headphones on the whole time so running on the parade route wasn't as intriguing as I expected.  But it was fun and I am so glad I did it.

I didn't get the memo that you could pick up the number and chip the days before the race so I was stressed to get them before the race since the starting line was about a half a mile away from the registration tables.  Jon was amazing as usual and got up to drive me around so I wouldn't have to wake up way way way early.

I ripped this pics off of the runner pics website.

This during the race a little more than half way, with Jon's old shades on, I left mine at my moms.  For some reason I always run with my thumbs up-Jon likes to tease me about it.

My sister, Rachel did the 10k, so after my race I grabbed some water and food, and went out to watch for her.  I decided to finish the race again, but this time with her. It was pretty fun to do that, especially because I had my energy back.

Then we headed down to the Parade. Rachel's In-laws always have a great spot, and they let us come sit with them.

The whole group

My cute boys, I sure love them

Then we went to the Freedom Festival which was crazy hot. I was hoping to find these PVC pipe noodle swords for the boys. I got some last year and they loved them all year, but they are starting to fall apart. One booth was out, another had some cheaper ones, but I thought there weren't anymore. But after I bought them 10 mins later I found the ones I wanted at another booth...darn. The boys were exhausted and hot as was Jon, so we just headed home.

We had a BBQ with the WGR friends, and then we did fireworks on our own. It was actually pretty fun this year.

It was a such a nice weekend to take a break and not think about all the craziness that was ahead, with selling the house, finding a rental to move into, packing up, etc.

I sure love the freedoms we have to put on such events, to participate in them, and to decide and make our lives what we want them to be!

Fourth of July: Part 1

As always, 4th of July Part 1:

Being in Utah, if Independence Day falls on a Sunday, we celebrate all weekend. Saturday is when they do the fireworks and Monday (the day off) they do the parade.  This year we went and saw the fireworks on Saturday.

This was as good as it got. There was too much wind so they couldn't blow the balloons up all the way. The wind was pulling the balloons away before they even heated the air.  (Speaking of Hot Air Balloons, we can see the out the windows of our house here in Heber every morning. Pretty fun!)

As soon as the Coke Bottle was almost upright the wind started blowing it back and forth it was pretty crazy. It was a cool balloon, I wish we could have seen it in the air.

The big thing Zac remembers about the Fourth of July is the hot air balloons, and for months he had been talking about riding in one. That costs about $190 per person.  Since that is not in the budget, and no balloons were being blow up or taking off. I asked an operator if Zac could get in. Zac was thrilled!

He also liked the little window where you can see the ground from the air

And Max has to be just like his brother. He even daily mimics most of what Zac does and says.

I can't remember what we did during the day-oh I remember now, Jon took a nap while I shopped for more summer clothes for the kids, we cleaned cars and shopped for a bunk bed for the kiddos. We went to 6 places with no luck. We are pretty picky.

Then we went to Pier 49 Pizza and headed to the missionary field to watch the fireworks.

Jon was a genius and brought a kite to play with. Other little kids were so jealous.

I love this picture! We kept telling Zac to look at the kite...haha

Pretty sun set

The last couple days the boys have really been into playing Barrel of Monkeys. There are also Barrel of Bunnies in there from my mom, from a few Easters ago.

Max was cold

Watching the fireworks. It can be tricky to watch the fireworks from outside the stadium, you never know when they are done. One year they did like 5 mins fireworks, 10 mins of nothing and then 5 mins fireworks, and 10 mins of nothing, like 5 times. It sucked. This year they took a break between the main fireworks show and the firework finale.  Lots of people left before the finale. I miss the days way back when you could listed to the program on the radio.

On the way home-long day for us all. And it took 45 mins to get home too....when it normally takes 10 mins.

I really should be unpacking, but . . . . I'm not. Back posting is much more appealing. Although I would really like to clear out the garage so we can park the cars inside it. But its just too hot to do that.
