Sledding: January 1st at 1:00p in 2013

We got to do our tradition again this year.  Jason and Kari were here of course and we invited Emily, Dave and his fiancĂ©, Rachel up to brunch and go sledding with us. I decided we'd have a yummy meal inspired by an amazing brunch Jon and I had a few years at Red Rock Cafe in Park City. Eggs in purgatory. Oh sooooo good!!!  Over easy egg, in fabulous marinara sauce, and roasted potatoes. And whole fruit juice in my new blendtec. It was fantastic, if I do say so myself....and I do.

Anyway, we were a little late getting started with people dawdling in the house.

But at least we had snow this year!!

I guess most of the good sledding hills are having houses built on them, so a neighbor suggested we try the girls camp. So we headed up that way.

This is where we stopped.

Steep!

It was so so so so cold that the snow was extremely powdery even though it had been days since it snowed. The riders boots would kick up tons of powder-COLD powder!

Yes, we were sledding right into the street. But not a single person came by the whole hour or so we were up there.

More powder!

Enzo had fallen asleep on the way there and got to hang out in the cozy car.

Em was the designated photographer and the catcher. The little kids needed to be caught otherwise they'd cross the road and hit the guardrail.

The boys were pretty nervous at first. Then after getting blasted with powdered they hated it. But we convinced them to go again and on the tube and they loved it!

Dave got blasted too!

Enzo woke up right before we were ready to go. I got him out of the carseat to give him some fresh air for a few mins.

We had a great time! Thanks for coming everyone!

And now I'm pretty much caught up. Not much has happened in January. Just a lot of sickness, colds, croup, influenza. Jon took the first 2 weeks of the month off between quitting Skullcandy and starting at Goal Zero. And Zac had it off too because there was a competition at his school. We also decided to keep Max home too.  It was a very nice time refocusing on priorities-spending time with each other and strengthening our relationships. Jon took the boys to breakfast and an outing one on one. I started routines to get ahold of our household better. We slept, read, pondered, wrote in our journals. We are taking a break from karate to focus more on family time and not trying to cram everything in resulting in dreadful evenings. We have time to do projects together, to read together, to make dinner with minimal stress, and just have a more calm (and clean) house. I've also taken a break from volunteering each week at Zac's school. We eat dinner before 6 instead of waiting for Jon to come home. Its been so so so much better. The kids eat better. I actually enjoy making dinner (a little bit) when its earlier. And when Jon comes home, dinner is over and the kitchen is clean and the boys are ready for bed. (I don't know why its easier without him home. Probably, because I'm more no nonsense. Jon plays with them between each thing and gives them treats/dessert. I'm the slave driver haha. Then when Jon gets home we sit and talk or play a game or read while he eats dinner. Its just over all so much nicer. But now that the weather has been frigid this month-most of the days below 0, and keeping sick kids in, I'm going stir crazy. I'm still trying to keep things simple, but I also want to be involved. Anyway, I'll try to upload the pics from this last month. See ya around.

New Years Eve 2012

On Pinterest...(there's that phrase again) I saw this idea for New Years Eve for little kids. A balloon with each hour labeled on it and inside is an activity to do. It helps the kids keep track of the time instead of asking is it time yet, and makes the night more fun over all.  We started at 5p and went til 8p. (There was no way I was going to entertain them til Midnight.)

Jason and Kari came to visit and it was great to celebrate with them. And we started a new tradition. For New Years Eve we BBQ a london broil and get a little of that summer flare in the middle of the winter. It was a little tricky; Jon said every time he opened the lid to check the meat, he'd loose 50 degrees on the grill.

The 5p activity was playing in the snow. Make a snowball, having a snowball fight, make snow angels.  It was a little tough because it was so cold, the snow wouldn't stick together.

Halle opens 6p

Play a game. Zac got the game headbandz for Christmas. Its a great game; its easy for kids and not to painful for adults! :)

Max had 7p

Make cookies. This was cook mix in a mason jar. A neighbor gift that made it really easy on me! :)

8:00p The "New Year" is finally here!

Then we found a count down video on youtube. This was from London. They had a huge show! The fireworks were endless! Zac liked how he could see Big Ben. (Later we realized it was the 2012 show...not 2013. Oh well, it served its purpose.) Then we toasted with sparkling red grape juice to the New Year.

We put the boys to bed, then us ladies fought to stay awake til Midnight, while Jon and Jason played a Forza 4 on the Xbox.

New Years is a dumb holiday for sober parents with young children.... Any other ideas to make it fun?

Just Hanging Out

Dec 29

I decided to do my January calendar while we had dessert. It was very liberating to erase all the busyness that was December and know I was done and then start fresh.

Pics of Enzo from December

I could just eat him up!!

(Can we say happy first birthday...)

I LOVE this little hat. I got it at Swiss Days this last fall.

Poor little guy had a pretty good fever this week. He had influenza. And it was a different strain than the 2 round course of flu shots he got in Oct and Dec.

His first time up to the bar.

The After Math

Dec 26

The day after was just a nice day to do whatever we wanted. It was low key and not planned.

In the hustle and bustle of the Holidays, this, my craft room really gets hammered. Sewing, wrapping, hiding, boxing/shipping, crafting, baking, storage, the catch all really. A few days before Christmas, Zac, commented how there was no room to walk as he was falling over trying to reach something without stepping on things. Embarrassingly, you couldn't see the carpet in here. Jon, appropriately, never said a word. He learned a couple months before, that this is MY space and he has no place to comment on anything that happens here. Hahaha, poor guy. He had mentioned how messy it was all the time and how I should clean it, and jokingly added, otherwise I won't get a craft room. After an emotional melt down from me about how this is the only space that's just for me, where I can find myself and exercise my creativity, and be me without all the burdens of my responsibilities, he knew to steer clear of this sensitive issue.

After climbing around things, unsuccessfully looking for items, and reluctantly letting guests use the wrapping "station", I decided the day after Christmas I would clean it all up!

Now I wish I had taken a before pic, because it would be so much more impressive! But here are the afters-spic and span!

Jon playing with the boys and their new toys. This is an awesome circuit kit. It includes play and lots of learning.

Then we went out to dinner so we didn't have to cook or clean. On the way to and from Tarahumara,  Jon was taking advantage of the slippery, abundant snow and tried to slide when we turned. I told him go do this in an empty parking lot not in the street with kids in the car. On the way home, we drove past the soccer fields and Jon pulled in to do some doughnuts.  It was really fun! I think the last time I had been in a car doing doughnuts was in High School. After going around for a bit we headed home, and drove by another large empty lot-we stopped there too! Our rims and tire wells were filled with snow.

Then we had Enzo open the rest of his presents. By the time we got going with opening presents on Christmas morning he was ready for his nap.  There are a lot of pics. But I just love his facial expressions and the way he sits.
